Things to do in Ahmedabad this weekend
Where words fail, art speaks, is a thoughtfully curated exhibition of contemporary art by veteran artists that astounds with its quiet power with Baroda-based Chanda Agarwal curating a show that brings together works by some of India’s most respected names, including KG Subramaniam, Jyoti Bhatt, Rini Dhumal, Jeram Patel, Khodidas Parmar, T Venkatna and Dushyant Patel. The mix of black-and-white and colour paintings offers a window into each artist’s distinct voice while tracing a shared journey spanning six to seven decades.

Abhivyakti, a festival of bold voices and colours
Day one of the seventh edition of Abhivyakti – The City Arts Project opened with the kind of energy that Ahmedabad audiences return for each year. The evening unfolded as a lively mix of dance, music and theatre, where traditional forms sat comfortably beside bold, contemporary experiments. Viewers moved from the pulse of street-inspired rhythms to an Odissi performance built around quiet, personal transformation, and then to pieces that stitched together strands of India’s diverse sonic heritage. With performances running simultaneously across the Gujarat University Campus, ATIRA and the Shreyas Foundation Campus, the festival set the tone for a week that promises fresh voices and thoughtful artistry.

The exhibition showcases twenty-seven exquisitely carved, reclaimed doors sourced from Odisha, wherein designers Ariane Ginwala (This and That) and Richa Maheshwari (Boito) have reinterpreted traditional motifs across contemporary mediums, complemented by sculptural lighting designed by Radhika Sanghvi. Every piece in Niraba pays homage to Odisha’s diverse artisanal heritage while foregrounding sustainability, material storytelling, and the tactile beauty of handcrafted design.
